Celebrity weddings are all about the glitz and glamour, peppered with the occasional titbit of scandal to keep the hounds sniffing for the treasured bounty.
In Bollywood terms though, it’s a simple case of who does or doesn’t make the cut for the grand event.
The ongoing Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor wedding has already churned up quite a bit of controversy, forcing the bride’s father Randhir Kapoor to actually issue an apology to the film fraternity at large if they haven’t made it to the exclusive guestlist, courtesy the newlyweds request to keep the wedding a private affair.
According to papa Kapoor, only 60 close family members and friends of the star couple will be in attendance at the actual wedding ceremony at Pataudi Palace on October 16.
The doors will be thrown open for a much larger crowd at the reception on October 18 in New Delhi, where some celebrity names, or lack of them, have raised quite a few eyebrows?
Are the Bachchans coming?
According to media sources, Shweta Nanda, or better known as Shweta Bachchan, has confirmed her family – Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan – has definitely been invited for the grand affair.
We assume the affair in question is the reception; but it would be interesting to see if the Saifeena wedding could put an end to the feud brewing between the two film families for nearly a decade now.
For those who don’t recall, Shweta is married to half a Kapoor, with her husband Nikhil Nanda being the grandson of actor-director Raj Kapoor, through his mother Ritu, and Kareena’s cousin.
However, it was during that fateful wedding that Kareena’s sister Karisma and Amitabh’s son Abhishek fell in love.
An engagement was announced a few years later, but the relationship lay in tatters shortly after, with the Bachchans and the Kapoors parting ways not so amicably.
Since, Kareena has never worked with any of the Bachchans, and neither did she nor her betrothed walk the red carpet on the occasion of Amitabh’s 70th birthday bash last week.
Could this wedding be the Bachchan’s turn to snub the Kapoor clan or an opportunity to bury the hatchet? We should know in a few days.
Where are the Khans?
Meanwhile, a favourite of the brethren of Bollywood Khans, it seems Aamir and Salman may both give this wedding a miss.
The former, who is currently in Chicago shooting for “Dhoom 3”, will be jetting into India in a day, but will be unable to attend the reception as it clashes with the music launch of his film, where he stars opposite Kareena.
The “Talaash” music launch has been scheduled for October 18, which will see Aamir in attendance, along with Rani Mukherji and Farhan Akhtar.
However, as the trio won’t be attending the wedding, sources say they have planned a special segment especially dedicated to their co-star Kareena.
A source close to the film’s unit was quoted in the media as saying that the cast and crew will be saying a few words in honour of Bebo and celebrating her happiness.
Meanwhile, Kareena’s “Bodyguard” co-star Salman continues to live in denial.
The actor was recently quoted in the media as saying: “Since I haven’t got an invitation yet, I don’t think it’s happening.”
He added: “I’ll know it’s happening only when I get an invite.”
Well, let’s hope Shah Rukh Khan at least shows at the reception.
Shahid Kapur and Amirta Singh get ex-ed
It is probably safe to say Kareena’s ex Shahid Kapur and Saif’s first wife Amrita Singh will not be invited to the wedding celebrations.
In fact, Bollywood sources are saying the duo have gone into hiding to avoid the media glare and the provocative questions that could range between ‘how do you feel that your ex is getting married?’ to ‘did they really cheat on you?’
While we sympathise with the two exes, at least Amrita is ensuring Saif and her children, Sara and Ibrahim will be attending the celebrations, unlike their non appearance at their grandfather, Mansour Pataudi’s funeral.
Neetu Kapoor is not enemy No1 anymore
Rishi Kapoor’s wife Neetu has confirmed to the press that she will be attending the grand wedding celebrations, drawing a cheer we think, from the entire clan as she and Kareena’s mother Babita bury the 25-year hatchet.
While no one knows the real story, the two daughter-in-laws of the late Raj Kapoor have never seen eye to eye, prompting both of them publicly avoiding each other at family events.
Who can forget Neetu’s non-appearance at Karisma Kapoor’s wedding in 2003 or Kareena, Karisma and Babita not showing up at Neetu’s daughter Riddhima’s bug day in 2007?
However, sources say that Babita personally invited her sister-in-law for the grand occasion and the family will be in full attendance to wish the happy couple.
