Sharjah will not renew licence of companies from advertising, printing signboards and calligraphy sectors if their employees have not obtained proper Arabic language training as part of its initiative to protect the language.

On the eve of the Arabic Language Day, Sharjah Economic Development Department (Sedd) has “issued an administrative circular to not renew the licences of such establishments without having a proof that they have taken (Arabic) course.”

In order to protect and promote Arabic language, Sedd has issued a number of rules for the language used for signboards whereby it organised specific training course in Arabic Language Rule for Trade Names Section’s employees.

In addition, Sedd will also organise training courses for such companies and give one-year grace period to complete the requirement. This was announced on the eve of Arabic Language International Day marked on December 18 every year.

Furthermore, Sedd launched a campaign through social media calling public to place their comments and report about any errors they find in the signboards as the Department would take necessary action on such a matter.

The Department calls on everyone in the society to report any syntactic errors that they may find in some of the signboards and advertisements by calling 80080000 or through the instant messaging service on the number 0501067971.

Sultan Abdullah bin Hadda Al Suwaidi, Chairman of Sedd, honoured calligraphers for completing Arabic language workshop. Arabic novels were also distributed among employees to stimulate them to read and expand their knowledge.
