Dubai businessman kidnapped by 16 'partners' rescued

An Indian businessmen has been rescued - from the captivity of 16 of his own business associates - by Dubai Police.

Legal sources said his former business partners allegedly kidnapped him from his Al Rashidya apartment and assaulted him after locking up in a flat in Al Baraha area of Dubai. They wanted to recover Dh640,000 he is reported to have borrowed from them some nine months ago for a furnitures business.

Bijish Mannancherry, the Indian businessman from Malappuram, Kerala, was released by the timely intervention of the Criminal Investigation Department of Dubai Police. Legal sources handling the kidnapping case said, the 16 'friends' have been arrested. All, except for three, have been released on bail.

Consolidated Advocates negotiated the release of the businessman and worked with the Dubai Police to track down the missing businessman and traced the culprits through their mobile phone signals.

"Bijish has been doing furniture business and borrowed money from three of his friends. However, when one of his employees absconded with a huge amount of the company money, his business plans faced problems and he could not pay monthly dividend to his partners. He used to pay them money till two and half months ago and when he stopped giving them money, they started using muscle power here and threatened his family back home,” said an official from Consolidated Advocates.

Bijish had borrowed money from Sadiq and Samseer, and when he stopped paying them their monthly dues, they went to his apartment in Al Rasidhiya and kidnapped and locked him up for four days in an apartment in Al Baraha area of Dubai. Bijish claimed he was beaten in the locked up room and his family back home was also threatened over telephone by his friends-turned-enemies. He said the kidnappers called his parents back home and said Bijish is in their custody and demanded Indian Rupees 3.5 million to release him. A group of goons too reached their house in Malappuram and threatened to eliminate the family, if they don’t pay the money due in Dubai. Salam Pappinissery from Consolidated Advocates said kidnapping is considered a serious offence and the culprits can get up to four years imprisonment.

The businessman was released after Dubai Police CID traced the mobile numbers of the gang members and later arrested all those who were involved in the kidnapping drama.
