An Arab suspect allegedly raided a jewellery store and an exchange shop in one of the Gulf countries and sought refuge in the UAE with a large sum of cash.

He was comfortably staying at a hotel apartment in Dubai’s Al Baraha area, almost putting the crime behind him. However, little did he know that Dubai Police was zeroing in on him.

When he was taking a leisurely stroll with a woman one evening, he was taken into custody, according to a top police official.

Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Deputy Commander-in Chief, Dubai Police, said the fugitive had dropped his pistol at the scene of the crime, though he had meticulously planned the robbery and escape.

“He left the scene immediately after the armed robberies on September 6 morning,” Maj-Gen Mazeina added.

Investigations had revealed that he had entered the emirate through Dubai International Airport.

Thereafter,  on the instructions of Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director, CID, security and anti-crime cooperation among the GCC countries, a CID team pursued the suspect and nabbed him within a few hours.

“The team first discovered he was in Al Baraha area. Later when they saw him walking around accompanied by a woman from an East European country, the police team began closely following him. Because they did not want to arrest him in a public place as that could have endangered the lives of pedestrians and other people around,” explained Al Mansouri.

So they followed him until he entered the hotel, where they rounded him up in a closed place and overpowered him as he tried to escape.

Some of the stolen cash was confiscated from him.
