Two people were killed in a road accident on Emirates Road late last night.

The incident occurred as a pick-up truck heading towards Sharjah, hit a Bangladeshi man trying to cross the busy road.

Sources at the Dubai Traffic Police told Emirates 24|7 that the driver of the vehicle, an Indian national, was also killed as the vehicle swerved and overturned following the accident.

Crossing the Emirates Road is strictly banned and police have often warned of severe penalties on pedestrians attempting such adventures.

While Emirates Road continues to remain the deadliest in terms of the number of accidents, the number of pedestrian deaths has been falling.

According to reports the number of pedestrians killed in road accidents dropped from 78 in 2009 to 43 in 2010. Police said increase in awareness among the public could further reduce the fatalities in 2011.
