Saudi authorities have warned people going out to search for mushrooms that they could be jailed 30 months and fined SR25,000 (Dh25,000) if they entered banned border areas during the current mushroom season.

The Interior Ministry said it had designated banned areas in the North and the Eastern region and advised those searching for mushrooms to keep out.

“Persons and cars must keep out of those marked areas. Violators will be jailed to 30 months and fined SR25,000,” the Ministry said in a statement on its website.

It said border guards arrested an average 300 people a day in the previous mushroom season in the Northern region near the border with Iraq.

About 9,000 violators were also seized in the Eastern region in the previous season last year, it added.
