Thirty-five years after a historic performance in Iran, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra returns to the region this week.

A concert on Tuesday, November 9, at Emirates Palace Auditorium is the second in a series of events being organised by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage and will feature symphonies by Haydn and Brahms.
In 1951, the Berliner Philharmoniker Orchestra performed under Wilhelm Furtwängler in Cairo.
Herbert von Karajan then conducted the orchestra at the 1968 Baalbeck Festival in Lebanon and 1975 in Teheran.
This week’s event is led by Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Sir Simon Rattle, described as one of the most revered and dynamic conductors of our time.
In 2006, a group of ten European media outlets voted the Berlin Philharmonic number three on a list of "top ten European Orchestras", after the Vienna Philharmonic and Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, while in 2008 it was voted the world's number two orchestra in a survey among leading international music critics organized by the British magazine Gramophone (behind the Concertgebouw).
