Deepika and Saif: love, betrayal or friendship?

This year, the Indian Premier League (IPL) was a dry run with hardly any Bollywood beauties attending the cricketing tournament.

Deepika Padukone who was seen cheering the Royal Challengers Bangalore stayed out of Mallya’s way. Giving an excuse Deepika said, “I’ve been out for a while, I was in Manali for a month, then went to Jodhpur for shooting and have just returned.  I have been following the IPL, teams and scores, but unfortunately have not made it to the stadium. I seem some great cricket happening though.”

Recently the theatrical trailer of Deepika’s upcoming movie ‘Cocktail’ was released. “The response to the trailer has been fantastic. People are responding to the fact that they have not seen me in a similar look before,” says an elated Dips.

‘Cocktail’ will mark the debut of model Diana Penty, while Deepika is paired opposite Saif Ali Khan.

Comparisons to ‘Love Aaj Kal’ have begun, but Deepika does her best to chalk the differences.

She says, “The minute people see Saif and me together, people are reminded of ‘Love Aaj Kal’. But in terms of a film, this is a very different one.

Imtiaz has written this film but it is being directed by Homi Adajania. "Of course, it is a love story but it is also about friendship, betrayal, fun and trust.”

With a lot of drinking and a bold attitude in the film, Deepika talks about her character of Veronica. Deepika says, “I am not the writer of the film, but the dialogues have been written according to the character that I portray.  Veronica is a very confident girl. She is someone who is very self assured and very confident about herself, what she thinks about life, the way she conducts herself and that’s how her attitude is.”

While ‘Cocktail’ came to Deepika, this actress was offered both the female roles and asked to decide over one. Relating the incident Deepika Padukone says, “‘Love Aaj Kal’ was a very different role for me and even in this film I was offered both the roles. My producer was kind enough to give me both the roles, and he said, “I have two roles for you and I want you to choose which one you want and I took it as a challenge. Imtiaz also suggested the same role of Veronica. Since Meera from ‘Love Aaj Kal’ is similar to the other character in this film, it was interesting to play Veronica and I’m glad I went with that.”

While playing friends on screen, we asked the actress who are her good friends in Bollywood? Without a second’s thought Deepika says, “Shahana Goswami is my best friend. I have always maintained that being in this industry we cannot plan when friends will come in our life and when they will move out. And she, happened to be a co-star in one of my beginner films.  And before I knew it, we became good friends; she is the first person I call when I am back in Mumbai."

Deepika is good at giving hits and one of the a-listers of the industry.  With no filmy background to boast of, the actress says she has developed her own style.

“There are a lot of people in the industry to be inspired by, like Rekha, Hema Malini, Sridevi and Madhuri. But at the end of the day as an actor you should make a niche for yourself. You have to have you own individual identity and style. Of course, there are a lot of good actresses that I look up to, whose acting style I admire, but I believe that I have my own style,” concludes Deepika.
