He’s probably the only Indian actor who boasts of undying adulation and a glorified screen persona that allows him to fly around and indulge in quirky stunts. Whether it’s lighting cigarettes after flinging them mid-air with his gun or biting away bullets, he’s a man of immense supremacy.
And an immortal one at that.
Rajinikanth’s screen image has never been allowed to die so far because it’d eventually bring upon itself the wrath of his die-hard loyalists, who openly threaten to burn down the theatre if such an act is ever portrayed.
And, so even his birthday, the 62nd this time, unfolded to much pomp and show the world over.
The fact that it falls on the much-auspicious 12-12-12 was just the icing on the cake.
Early in the day, numerous fans thronged his official residence to wish the superstar. As is the tradition, Rajinikanth did come out and meet them.
Thousands of his supporters also stepped out on the streets to dance to his music and mark their respect for the superstar.
Some even showed their unconditional support by offering milk to his life-size poster.
The celebrations kick-started early this year with the actor’s wife launching the special birthday track in honour of the superstar on December 8.
Composed by Vijay Anthony, the ‘Idhu Rajini’ track is rendered by music director and Malaysian singer Emcee Jazz, and directed by Raghava Lawrence.
The day also unveiled Rajini’s mega-budgeted political thriller ‘Sivaji 3D’. AVM Studios which originally made ‘Sivaji’ in 2007 has worked on altering the format to 3D.
According to the Indian media, Members of Rajinikanth’s fan club organized blood donation camps, distributed financial aid to the needy, hosted lunches at old-age homes and held special temples ceremonies.
Two books on Rajinikanth were also released. Titled ‘My Days with Baasha: The Rajnikant Phenomenon’, is penned by filmmaker Suresh Krishna, who worked with Rajini in three films – ‘Annamalai’, ‘Veera’ and ‘Baasha’.
The second, ‘Rajinikanth – The Definitive Biography’, is written by London-based film journalist Naman Ramachandran, with the book’s blurb reading; “This book is the closest we are likely to get to the definitive Rajini story”.
Speaking to the Indian media, trade analyst C S Sundar says, “No other star in Tamil cinema can claim this kind of popularity. Rajinikanth’s birthday has always been celebrated as a festival and this time it’s doubly so since the date is 12-12-12, which is as unique as Rajini.”
Rajini Muthu, office-bearer of a Rajinikanth fan club told bollywoodlife that their “Thalaivar’s birthday is the biggest day of the year” for them. “He has set an example for everyone with his lifestyle and his life is his lesson.”
Rajini, however, chose a quiet family celebration for his spend day.
There’s no doubting the superstar’s immense reel-power, and in an effort to extend the rela impact of his super-powers, a web service firm has created a website that runs without Internet but on “Rajini power”.
As soon as visitors log onto this particular website, they get to read message that says, "He is no ordinary man, this is no ordinary website. It runs on Rajini Power."
