The Egyptian city of Alexandria on Friday hosted an iftar meal on what it hoped to be the world's longest table.

The 4.5 kilometre long table could seat up to 10-thousand people for the iftar dinner, which follows the daily Ramadan fasting.

The idea originally came to a group of engineering students, and hundreds of volunteers on Friday took part in organizing the event.

The seaside iftar tables extended from Al-Mahrousa district in the west of the city to Sidi Gaber in the east.

The event was organised by the Alexandria governorate in cooperation with a number of businessmen and civil society groups.

Dozens of businessmen and other donors partially funded the event.

Ossama Barakat, one of the organisers of the event, said the 4.5 kilometre (2.7 mile) long table had surpassed in length the previous record-holder Italy's table, which he said was two kilometres long (1.2 miles).

Guinness World Record officials later handed organisers a certificate recognising the new record.

Barakat said he hoped the event would attract tourists and improve Alexandria's image.
