Dubai traffic update: Gitex jam, Metro call

All roads are literally leading to Gitex Shopper at the Dubai World Trade Centre this morning, with commuters reporting on hour-long jams stretching from the Defence Roundabout, all the way to BurJuman Shopping Centre in Bur Dubai.

Commuters will be well advised to take the Metro if headed to the event.

Said one frustrated commuter: “It is a five minute drive from the BurJuman junction to the Trade Centre tunnel, including time spent at traffic lights. It took me 55 minutes to cover the stretch this morning. This is beyond ridiculous.”

As the region’s largest retail expo stretches into day two today, the Sunday morning work commute has added to the traffic caused by retailers and exhibitors heading into DTWC; with the influx expecting to peak during the evening rush hour as shoppers head into Gitex post work, said another.

Earlier, a three-car crash has been reported on Sheikh Zayed Road, stalling morning traffic. An eye-witness reported that a sports car, four-wheel drive and a sedan were involved in the crash.

He added that it happened around 8.10am after Exit42 towards Sharjah. Traffic came to a standstill, with morning commuters struggling to make it to work on time.

Morning commuters also reported slow moving traffic near Dubai Bowling Centre at Al Quoz. “It took me 20 minutes to travel from Al Khail Road exit to the Dubai Bowling Centre, which is hardly around 400 meters,” observed a commuter.
