Almost half the number of private schools in Sharjah has sought permission to hike tuition fees for the academic year 2013-14.
According to a report in Al Khaleej, 43 out of 86 private schools in the emirate have applied to the department for approval. Of these schools, 34 follow government and foreign curriculums and 9 follow Indian curriculums.
Mohammed Ismail Al Zarouni, Head, Schools and Institutes, education department, Sharjah, said a committee has been set up to look into the request. He added that the schools are required to obtain at least 70 per cent in four fields in order to be eligible to raise fees, according to the Resolution No 203 of 2008.
According to the resolution, schools are allowed to increase 5-10 per cent annually, Al Zarouni said, adding that the earlier resolution of 2001 allowed an increase only every three years.
He also clarified that school authorities are required to inform parents before the end of the school year about a possible increase in the following academic year.
There are 140,256 students in 86 private schools in Sharjah, which include 17,062 Emirati students.
