Major road improvements are be carried out on the road from Al Ain to the UAE-Oman border post.
Zayed bin Sultan Street, which runs from the border crossing near Buraimi to the Al Ain border post forms an important route for traffic between the two countries as well as to communities en route.
The road currently passes through areas in Al Ain City such as Mazyad, Dhaher and Al Kharir while it crosses other roads and areas such as Mazyad border crossing, Al Ain City, the Truck Way, and the Qua’a Road.
The Department of Transport (DoT) of Abu Dhabi is trying to widen the corridor from Khatam Al Shikla to Mazyad Roundabout. The project involves widening of the road by transforming it from a two-lane road with one lane in each direction to a four-lane road with two lanes in each direction.
An underpass for the Kharir area and another junction for the Mazyad Roundabout will also be added to the road network. Access to residential areas will be improved with construction of entry and exits points. Once completed, the project is expected to benefit to areas like Mazyad, Dhaher, and Al Kharir.
A detailed study on improving traffic safety on the current two-lane road was conducted in 2012.
The second phase of the project involves laying out a long-term plan that aims to find more efficient solutions to serve users of the road and the surrounding areas. The final designs of the proposed expansion have been submitted and tendering will start in the second quarter of this year.
