Avoid taking elevator alone at night, police warn female residents

The recent case of a man stalking women about to get into elevators alone has prompted the Abu Dhabi police to put out a security warning for female residents of the UAE.

Brigadier Maktoum Al Sharifi, Director, Capital Police Directorate, has urged women to exercise caution while using elevators or stairwells of residential buildings in Abu Dhabi.

In the case which prompted the warning, a 30-year-old Egyptian man is accused of stalking female domestic workers at night, cornering them in elevators and then sexually assaulting them while threatening them with a knife.

The stalker had beaten-up some victims and even threatened to kill them if they fought back or reported the matter to the police.

Al Sharifi has called upon people living in residential buildings no to allow their children and domestic workers alone out after dark.

He also urged residents to report any suspicious visitors to buildings and to owners to install proper lighting and security systems in the elevators and stairwells.
