Here are 5 unusual job options in Dubai

Published
By Shuchita Kapur

Work options in Dubai are not just limited to hectic jobs in oil and gas, construction or with companies domiciled within the DIFC.
There are other options to choose from, and some of them are very different from a so-called conventional job.

These jobs do not require much technical qualifications, but the criteria could be passion as these range from shopping to talking and eating.

Emirates 24|7
lists some unconventional jobs in the country that most of us would love to do and get paid for too.

Food taster

To eat is a universal need, and all of us work so that we can put food on the table. Instead of spending your hard-earned money on gourmet food, ranging from a three-course to a seven-course meal to sweets and treats, why not make those treats pay you?

There are various jobs available on different job websites in the city, looking for food tasters. It could range from a five-star hotel chain or just a normal restaurant. The chef can do this job most of the times, but food companies that take their business seriously do have a slot for a food taster.

Besides tasting dishes limited to the main course, you could well be a tea or an ice-cream taster. Adverts for such jobs require candidates with a good sense in taste, aroma, texture and appearance and the ability to evaluate precisely. A college degree in food science or nutrition won’t hurt your chances.

Personal shopper

If you are fashion conscious, shopaholic and love brands (who doesn’t?), this one’s for you. Several high-end stores in the UAE hire such candidates. As a personal shopping consultant, you should be able to offer expert fashion advice, wardrobe consulting for a season or any special occasion.

“As a personal shopper for our largest department store in Dubai you will be responsible for the personalised selection of products for our VIP Customers from across the globe,” reads the advert of a high-end store in the city.

Mystery shopper

Some companies in the UAE also hire mystery shoppers. In this job, you are expected to analyse the service provided by luxury brands, known for their prestigious, classic and high-quality products.

To fulfil the selection criteria, you should of course like shopping with an eye for detail along with good reporting skills. You should also have a creative mind and a strong visual sense of luxury.

You need to be familiar with/interested in luxury trends and be a reliable and presentable individual.

Voice-over artist

This is one job that does not require any college degree. All you need to have is a good voice including inflexion, pronunciation, and diction.

Many job websites have openings for voice-over artists, in different languages, many of them being part-time or a one-off assignment.

Professionals in this area do voice-overs for TV, radio, and movies and even in recording studios where they take on projects for their clients.

And if you do your job well, you do stand chances of making this is a full-time job by becoming a presenter or a radio jockey.

Storyteller

In a world where children are glued to their iPads and iPhones, there is still demand for conventional storytellers in the city. Some are voluntary services whereas others are paid jobs.

There are storytelling events at bookstores like Kinokuniya or Jashanmal, in schools, nurseries or even during events. There are also organised storytelling events in bookstores and malls.

Many education storytellers have taken up their job seriously and get paid decent rates to go to schools to read stories to little children.
