It was time for double celebrations at the Nair household as the results for Grade 12 exams in the Indian schools were announced over the weekend.

While Vineet J Nair was judged the UAE topper by securing 98.2% in the Science stream in the All India Senior School Certificate Examination 2014, his twin brother Vishak secured an impressive 95.2%.

Conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, this is the last school exam before students head out to college.

“I was expecting good results, but I never imagined I would be the UAE topper,” confesses an elated Vineet.

“I’ve always been very hard working and consistent in my school work. I wanted to do well for my parents, my school and family.”

The DPS student claims he clocked three hours exclusively for his books every day. “I did a little bit of every subject. That way I didn’t feel bored and it kept me going.”

The hours, he says, increased closer to his final exams. “From December on, I’d spend 10-12 hours on my books.”

Vineet admits that there were days when he didn’t want to study, and those days he would simply skip the books. “There’s no point sitting in front of your books if you don’t want to. You need to concentrate, or else it’s a waste of time.”

On the day, he found out his marks, Vineet recalls being inundated with phone calls and messages. “I’ve been getting so many calls from my family and friends over here and back in India. Everyone’s really happy for me.”

He celebrated his success with his family, and went out with his friends to watch ‘X-men’.

His twin’s achievements have also brought much joy to the family. “It’s time for double celebration at home,” Vineet adds. “Vishak also scored 100% in Mathematics.”

While both the boys are into academics, Vineet insists their studying methods are slightly different. “I’m more organised, and even my brother would admit to that.”

Vineet and Vishak want to pursue engineering, just like their father and older brother. While Vineet has got admission in University of California, Berkeley, his brother has got into the University of Pennsylvania. “I’m still awaiting the results from NUS Singapore university.”

Their mother Kala claims she was expecting her twins to come out with flying colours. “They are very hardworking, and I was confident that they will do well.”

While their final year in school has predominately been about academics, Vineet says he’s also interested in Carnatic music, and trains at home during his leisure time. “I’m also into quizzing and public speaking, and like reading fiction.”

Before signing off, he insists that he couldn’t have achieved this huge feat without the help from his teachers. “All my teachers, right from Grade 9 to now have played an important role.”
