A 26-year-old Bangladeshi youth died and two people (an Egyptian and an Indian)  were seriously burnt when a balloon exploded while it was being filled with helium gas in the yard of a villa in Sharjah on Tuesday evening.

The glass windows of the villa and an adjacent one were broken and the windshield of a parked vehicle was damaged in the balloon accident.

The blast occurred when the owner of the house was filling a balloon that he had purchased, ahead of National Day celebrations, with helium gas.

Three seriously injured people were taken to Sharjah’s Al Qassimi Hospital and Kuwait Hospital.

Sharjah Police has warned of the risks involved in filling balloons by people not familiar with the task.  It urged those who want to celebrate National Day to buy balloons only from licensed vendors. However, balloons can also be a potential threat to aviation safety, it added.
