Dubai car accidents up, but deaths drop this year

The number of deaths caused by car accidents in January and February 2012 fell to 12 from 21 in January and February 2011, a drop of 42 per cent.

This happened in spite of the number of car accidents during January and February 2012 rising to 237 from 206 in the same months of the previous year.

Major General Mohamed Saif Al Zaffin, director of the General Department of Dubai Traffic Police, stressed “These statistics confirm that Dubai traffic police’s Strategy 2020 is on the right track.”

“The strategy aims to bring accident deaths to zero per 100,000 inhabitants of Dubai,” he added.

The accidents of January and February 2012 caused 372 injuries ranging from minor to medium and severe.

Of the total number of accidents, 211 or 89 per cent happened due to mistakes of drivers. 9.7 per cent of the accidents were caused by women while three accidents were caused by unknown people.

Men caused the deaths of nine people and 329 injuries, while women were behind the deaths of two people and 41 injuries. Unknown people caused the death of one person and two injuries.
