The Dubai Criminal Court heard the case of a Pakistani accused along with three others - one of whom was earlier convicted and two fugitives - of stealing 2,090 metres of electricity cables.
On June 19, 2006, workers at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) Stores Department in Al Aweer industrial area informed their senior official that electricity cables from used reels were missing, Dawood Mohammed, 31, Emirati, Stores Director, testified before the public prosecution.
He said the thieves removed the plastic pipes and protective layer that covered the cables and took only the copper wires using knives that were found at the scene.
Ibrahim Ishaq, 30, policeman, testified that the store was a large open sandy area that had a wall fence supported with steel net fence on the top. The thieves had cut the steel net fence to carry out the theft.
On June 28, Ishaq received information from a reliable source about a Pakistani, Fahed, who worked and resided in Sharjah and used a bus for stealing Dewa electricity wires.
Fahed was arrested and he confessed he committed the theft along with Akhtar, Rida and Bayej who had already left the country.
Fahed told police that his role in the theft was to provide the bus, wait opposite the hole that he claimed the other three had made in the fence and to act as a lookout while the others stole the cables.
He transported the three accused and the stolen wire a total of three times to Sharjah at around 2am.
Fahed told police he did not know the addresses of the other accused.
He was prosecuted and awarded an eight-month jail term and Dh1,000 fine followed by deportation by the Dubai Criminal Court on January 11, 2007.
On 29 April this year, police arrested Akhtar AQ, 28, jobless, whose fingerprints were found on the plastic pipes. He was charged and referred to court in the Dewa wire theft case.
The other two are still at large.
Akhtar admitted the charges before the court, which adjourned the case until August 26 for verdict.
