An eyewitness told Emirates 24l7 that all the power in the building was cut off by the authorities and residents in the apartment section of the complex were told to evacuate immediately. Elderly people were brought down via the staircase on stretchers, as lifts stopped functioning.

The fire was put out immediately by the civil defence team.

The residents were allowed to go back into their apartments later in the evening, but retail outlets located on the ground floor remained closed and employees were told to lock the shops and not enter the building until further notice.

He said the Civil Defence team will decide the opening of the retail outlets today, after inspection of the supermarket and the whole building.

One resident said a second fire erupted at around 10pm, but was shortly brought under control by the authorities.

The police were also still on the scene at 10.30pm on Monday.
