Lower Dewa bills, super-smart cars: How Dubai's Gitex 2012 changes your life

New technological advancements being showcased at this year’s event have the ability to completely transform the way you move, think, act and even sleep.

Dewa bills

For all those worried about very high water and electricity bills Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) launched a new feature that enables customers to view and compare their electricity and water consumption on a monthly and yearly basis. 

It also allows customers with multiple accounts to compare the consumption of up to ten accounts simultaneously.
 
Another added feature is Dewa’s upgraded online bill payment service including the Pay for Friend feature, which enables registered customers to pay their friends bills.
 
The autoPay mPay feature was added in cooperation with Dubai eGovernment; enabling automatic bill payments via mobile phones where customers can now specify the period in which their bills are paid, as well as specifying the maximum amount to be paid automatically every month.
 
Driver Assist Technologies
 
Ford announced a new introduction to its wide array of Driver Assist Technologies. The unique Biometric Seat that Ford’s research team is using can monitor the driver’s temperature levels, heart rate, respiration and other key indicators of stress.
 
The system will enable the company to test a number of different sensors and gather data on how drivers respond to a variety of inputs for a driver behavior model.
 
Staying on transportation and vehicles there are dozens of companies participating in this year’s event promising better solutions in monitoring and tracking vehicular movement, in an effort on enhance passenger safety.
 
Sitting in a base, companies can now track their vehicles, the distance and speed levels, passenger activity and send warning signals in case of disasters apart from inbuilt recording units that capture vital statistics similar to a Blackbox in the aircraft.
 
Wifi on a plane
 
Not long ago flights introduced new features where you could make telephone calls while aboard an aircraft.
 
Immersat is showcasing a new technological advancement where Wifi can be pushed onto the passenger’s own devise.
 
Last month the company announced SBTV a new solution that enables airlines real time and updated on demand entertainment content to passengers’ own devices.
 
The content can be transmitted to the aircraft over the Swift Broadband network and redistributed to passengers over Wifi.
 
Super internet speed and end of hard-drives
Local telecom giant etisalat said its customers will become the first in the Middle East to enjoy internet speeds of upto 300Mbps at home.
 
The feature has been introduced as part of its double pay and triple pay options through its fiber-optic broadband network.
 
From cloud computing that could make your hard drives redundant, to mobile phones and tablets that are tearing down the price margins and are moving a step ahead in terms of specs, hundreds of new innovative products were launched at Gitex.
