Mosquito menace in Discovery Gardens

It may be the time of the year for insects to multiply in number and bug residents in and around their houses. However, there are factors that encourage these little pests to party even harder.

Residents of Discovery Gardens know all about it. Residents claim that parts of the community have been flooded for over two months now, and that these stagnant pools of water have turned into an attraction for mosquitoes and flies.

“It has been more than two months that drainage water from building 1, Zen 1, in Discovery Gardens has been standing in the area, which is causing infestation and has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, flies and other insects.

“These insects are now causing health concerns for the community, especially for children who play in that area,” Salman Hashmi, an upset resident, wrote in to Emirates 24|7.

Water bodies are known to be a breeding ground, especially for mosquitoes. In other communities in Dubai, lakes or pools have caused similar problems in the past.

Earlier, this website reported of a mosquito menace in Silicon Oasis, where fountains and pools in the park are the main attraction.

“Right at the entrance of DSO from the Academic City side there is a small park. You can see small kids playing around there in the evenings. The place is full of mosquitoes. Obviously the pond there must be a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” said Justin Francis at the time.

However, as these water bodies are permanent, pest control is carried out on a regular basis, aiming to reduce the mosquito population where possible.

But in Discovery Garden, no action seems to have been taken, claim residents, and insist that this is challenging their patience.

Although concerned authorities have been repeatedly contacted, no attempt to solve the problem has been made, Salman says.
