A newly-wed Indian man drowned while swimming at Dubai Marina beach.

The incident took place over the holiday weekend, on Saturday.

According to close friends living in Dubai the incident occurred at Dubai Marina at about 2pm.

His relatives in India had yesterday said the accident had occurred at a beach in Sharjah.

“That is not true. Chris Mon had gone along with his friends to a beach in Dubai Marina. The sea was very rough and he drowned because of the high tide,” said Biju.
His body was flown to India for burial last night.

Chris Mon, 28 was employed at Bosco Aluminium & Glass in Dubai.

Majdi Tag, a senior life guard at with the Dubai Municipality in-charge of the Dubai Open Beach yesterday told Emirates24|7 that the sea on Saturday was pretty rough and he had hoisted the Red Flag in all but one section of the Open Beach that was open to the public.

“Moreover there is no Dubai Municipality employed lifeguard at Dubai Marina. There are some private lifeguards employed by hotels that man the private beaches. Police usually patrol the area,” said Majdi.

Although Chris was rushed to the hospital he could not be rescued.

Speaking to this website, one of Chris’s family members said, “We are still in a state of shock.”

Chris who has been working in the UAE for the last five years is from Kottayam district in the south Indian state of Kerala.

hris had married Neena, also from Kerala just six months ago.

Beaches and parks in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah were filled with visitors during the holiday weekend.

“The only section of the beach that was open on Saturday here was protected by the breakers. Still we were strictly monitoring the beach,” added Majdi.

Chris Mon, 28, had gone to the beach along with his wife and friends.

Chris and his friends then went to swim, while his wife sat on the sand.

Suddenly his friends realised that Chris had ventured too far in and was being pulled in to the sea due to a high tide.

They alerted the life guards, who went in to the water and pulled an unconscious Chris out.

Chris was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Efforts are being made to repatriate the body for burial in India.

Beaches and parks in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah were filled with visitors during the holiday weekend.

However one lifeguard told Emirates 24|7 that the lifeguards were stretched due to such large crowds.

“It would be good to have some volunteers during such occasions. The sea during the weekend was rough but manageable for anyone who knows swimming. People who do not know to swim should not venture into the water,” said the guard.

Earlier this year Sharjah police launched a campaign to create awareness among beachgoers in an effort to prevent the incidents of drowning.

The month long campaign that ended on July 30 stressed on the need for visitors to be aware of the danger signs and what needs to be done in emergency situations.
