The absence of clear price-tags on products in some shops in the UAE makes it difficult for shoppers to make decisions, which is why they seem to prefer shops where the items on sale are properly price-tagged.
Shopper Maitha Ahmed said she bought a price-tagged handbag from a shop where its price was lower than in a shop where the same bag had no price tag.
Hassan Al Kathiri, founder of ‘The Arab Consumer’ website, said: “Seeing price-tags on products on display in shops is one of the eight basic consumer rights.”
The consumer has the right to complain about a shop that does not put prices on its products. There is a law that compels shops to put price-tags on their wares. Violators will be fined, he said.
Kathiri added that the consumer should be aware that knowing the price is one of his rights since that makes comparing and choosing easier.
An official at the Department of Consumer Protection said that fines on shops for violating this rule can range from Dh10,000 to Dh200,000. This law applies to all shops, big or small, he added.
