The Saudi-dominated Arab coalition fighting to restore legitimacy in conflict-battered Yemen has seized the strategic Red Sea Hanish Island which had been used by the Iranian-backed rebels to smuggle weapons into Yemen.

The coalition also announced its forces and the national Yemeni army and resistance seized six strategic rebel positions in the Northern Al Jawf governorate which is close to Sanaa in a major offensive on Thursday.

“The Yemeni part of Hanish Islands is now totally under coalition control after the Houthis and their allies were expelled,” the coalition said in a statement carried by Yemen’s news network Masdar Online and other websites.

The statement said Al Jawf would be totally liberated from the insurgents soon after six strategic rebel positions were seized by the coalition and the resistance.

“Al Jawf is now close to returning to the legitimate authority…once Al Labnat military camp is seized, it will open the way towards Al Jawf capital Al Hazm,” it said.
