A Saudi businessman refused to sell a rare pigeon even for SR2.4 million (Dh2.3m), according to Arabic newspapers.

The businessman refused to sell his pet at an auction in China last week for $640,000.

He bought the rare pigeon for SR400,000 at an auction in Jeddah a month ago. There were more than 240 rare birds on show at the auction, of which 90 pigeons worth about SR700,000 were sold.

He is scheduled to take part in a Belgium auction this month-end.

Man demands SR18,000 for dead parrot

A Saudi man has filed a court suit against a local vet clinic demanding SR18,000 (Dh17,800) damages for causing the bird’s death during an operation, saying it had considered the parrot as member of his family.

The unnamed man had taken the parrot to the clinic to be treated for flu but was shocked to learn that the bird had died during an operation. He said he found the parrot headless inside a bird morgue.

"The man said the clinic offered him SR5,000 but he refused because he considered it as part of his family and that he delayed plans to buy a car to spend his savings on buying the bird,” Sharq Arabic language daily said in a report from the western Red Sea port of Jeddah.

"The man told court he wants SR18,000 damages or another parrot of the same species…the court is still considering the case.”
