Drones are unmanned, remotely-operated aircraft. The US has increasingly relied on them over the past 10 years for carrying out combat missions in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Drone strikes are usually aimed at targeting Islamic extremists in areas where national governments have limited control. But on the ground they’re often deeply unpopular -- some critics say by inadvertently killing civilians they breed even more extremism.
