A five-month old child has been saved from ritual sacrifice in Sri Lanka, the ‘Lankadeepa’ newspaper has reported.
A group of eight people, including two women, was arrested by the police from a house in Peliyagoda at dawn on Sunday while they were digging a hole in the middle of a two-storey house. They were hoping to acquire treasure by sacrificing the child, police said.
According to the police, one of the suspects is a postal worker who owns the house. Police found 40 undelivered letters in his house.
Police said the child’s body was wrapped with yellow, red and white thread and kept on a white cloth alongside a pot of water near an ‘L’ shaped hole dug in the middle of the house.
Police raided the house after receiving information about a ritual being conducted there and the sound of digging coming from there.
When policemen entered the house, the suspects were digging a seven-foot deep hole after placing flowers and small clay lamps around it while a man in a saffron robe was conducing rituals while going around the hole.
Police were suspicious of the claim of the house owner’s wife that the child belonged to her.
The suspects were due to be produced before the Mahara Court.
