COLOMBO A well-known swimming champion’s life came to a bizarre end when, in an apparent attempt to impress his friends, he dived into a water-less swimming pool during his birthday party.
Sri Lankan swimmer Sunil Santha was highly intoxicated when he jumped from the diving board into the dry pool which was under repair, according to a report in Tamilwin.
While the birthday party was on by the poolside in a hotel, Sunil suddenly decided to swim in the pool. He told his friends he wanted to show them how good he was in swimming and diving.
Perhaps because it was 10pm, neither Sunil nor his friends had noticed that the swimming pool was dry because it was under repair.
The swimmer climbed the steps, stood on the diving board, stretched out his hand in front and nosedived into the dry pool.
He was badly injured as his head hit the tiles on the swimming pool floor. He was rushed to hospital bleeding heavily but died soon after admission.
