Customs officials foiled a bid to smuggle currency out of the country to Dubai and Sharjah by two businessmen from Dehiwala, a suburb of Colombo, hidden inside their underpants, and they were arrested while passing through Customs entry at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, Customs media spokesman Customs Director of Preventive Division Lesley Gamini said.

Sunday’s ‘Lankadeepa’ newspaper reported there was Euro 32,400, Swiss Franc 3,200, Canadian $ 2,950 and Hong Kong $ 2,900 taken into custody by the Customs.

They have travelled between Dubai, Sharjah and Sri Lanka on several occasions and the suspects were arrested on their suspicious movements.

Further investigations are being carried out by Assistant Superintendents of Customs Nuwan Abeynaike, Chandima Karunaratne, Upul Indrajith, Nuwan Bandara, Sonali Lokubalasuriya, Dimuth Prasanna, Asanka Priyadharsana, Nishantha Jayasinghe and Hasantha Kaushalya under the supervision of Customs Superintendent L. P. Ariyaratne on the instructions of Airport’s Customs Director Sarath Nonis and Deputy Customs Director Stanly Senaratne under the purview of Director-General of Customs Jagath P. Jayaweera.
