Woman's hair cut for having extramarital affair

Colombo - A Sri Lankan woman’s hair was cut by people living near Al Azna Jumma Mosque in Galgamuwa area in Sabaragamuwa Province, for having an extramarital affair, sources told ‘Lanka Sri News’.

Family members of the victim, who had strongly opposed the affair with a Tamil youth in the same area, later cut the woman’s hair.

Six women who were arrested in this connection and produced before the Galgamuwa Magistrate Jayathilaka, were released on bail with a stern warning.

The 40-year-old woman had been warned by the mosque administration as well, for the extramarital affair with the youth, which was ignored by her.

The Sri Lanka Jamiyyathul Ulema, which has condemned this incident, said Sharia Law is not included in the country’s constitution.

Man remanded for adultery with minor

A man in Sri Lanka has been ordered to be kept in remand custody until July 23 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate for an alleged relationship with a 12-year-old girl, the ‘Mirror’ newspaper has reported.

The suspect, after promising to marry Priyantha Liyanage and getting her pregnant, also allegedly defrauded her of Rs30 million including 54 sovereigns of gold.

The Colombo Fraud Investigation Unit (CFIU) led by Inspector Dhammika Gamage arrested the suspect who has been identified as Krishantha Ranmal Pieris, a married father of a child.

Pieris had gone abroad in 2005 assuring the girl that he would take her abroad on his return in 2008.

Police reported to the courts that the girl is now 21 years old and the suspect is a father of two.

Man held for raping mother and daughter

A 55-year-old estate manager has been arrested by the Wanathawilluwa Police in Sri Lanka’s North Western Province, on charges of raping a mother and her daughter several times since May this year by threatening to kill them, the ‘Ada Derana’ has reported.

The victims, living in the Ralmaduwa area of Wanathawilluwa, are said to be a 39-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl who had stopped going to school and works in the estate with her mother.

The victims have been admitted to the Puttalam Base Hospital for medical examinations while the suspect is to be produced before the Puttalam District Court.
