A 23-year-old Sri Lankan woman is recovering in a government hospital in Srinivaspur near Kolar in the southern Indian state of Karnataka after consuming poison in front of her lover’s house on Saturday, the ‘Island’ newspaper has reported.

Daughter of a mason in Sri Lanka, the young woman went to Kuwait five years ago to take up work as a tailor in a garment factory.

She met Pasha, a native of Srinivasapur, in Kuwait where he was a driver. Pasha promised to marry her but returned home about a year ago. She has alleged that he married a local girl three months ago.

Pasha is now missing from Srinivasapur and police are searching for him, according to police sub inspector S. L. R. Reddy.

Reddy said the Sri Lankan woman wanted to marry Pasha and settle down in Sirinivasapur, as she claimed that she had no money either to go back to Sri Lanka or Kuwait since her visa has expired.
