Though the number of crimes by women has been on the decline for the past three years, offences by the gentler gender are likely to increase in the coming years, thanking to the ongoing economic boom in the UAE, according to the chief of a police station in Dubai.

Colonel Abdullah Sorour, Director of Naif Police Station, said, according to the station’s statistics, crimes committed by women declined from 1,516 in 2010 to 1,472 in 2011 and to 1,270 last year.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Col Sorour said crimes by women have evolved over the past 10 years as a result of women entering the workforce and business in large numbers.

Bounced cheque cases involving women has particularly increased considerably, following the entry of women into business, he added.

Women have sometimes used the full veil to conceal shoplifting, making it difficult for cameras in shops to identify them, he also said.

In one case, one member of a gang of women shoplifters was not fully veiled. After she was identified, arrested and questioned, it was possible for the police to arrest other members of the group.

Col Sorour said Filipinas topped the list in the number of crimes by women reported to the Naif police station, attributing it to the large population of people from the Philippines in the UAE.

Col Sorour said women are sometimes involved in violent crimes.

He cited the case of a 28-year-old Ugandan woman who came to Naif police station after stabbing to death an African man who had tried to rape her.
