Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Uruguay defender Sebastian Coates from Nacional for an undisclosed fee.
Coates, 20, arrived on Merseyside last week for his medical and was at Anfield to watch his new side beat Bolton on Saturday, but had to wait until Tuesday to have his work permit confirmed.
A statement on the Merseysiders' official website said: "Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Uruguay international Sebastian Coates on a long-term contract. Coates will now link up with his international teammates ahead of their friendly in Kiev on Friday night."
The centre-back becomes Kenny Dalglish's sixth summer signing after Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson, Jose Enrique, Charlie Adam and Alexander Doni.
Luis Suarez welcomed the arrival of his Uruguay team-mate at the club, writing on Twitter: "I want to welcome Coates, partner in the uruguayan team, friend and great player who just signed for Liverpool!"
