Liverpool flop Andy Carroll's days at the Kop may be numbered unless he raises his game with Kenny Dalglish ready to make a surprise move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka.
This news is further proof if any was needed that the £35 million signing is widely expected to be sold during the January transfer window.
Carroll's continuous failure to get the ball over the line including a penalty miss in the League Cup quarter-final against Chelsea last week which fortunately did not prove costly.
With Chelsea boss Andres Villas-Boas having accepted transfer requests from Anelka and Didier Drogba, Liverpool has been served up an opportunity to strengthen his attacking options as he aims to secure a top four finish.
The France international had a short spell at Anfield back in 2002 under Gerard Houllier but the French manager decided not to take up the option to sign the striker and instead brought El Hadji Diouf to the club.
Anelka, 32, has been linked with a surprising move to Chinese club Shenzen where Phillippe Troussier signed a contract in February.
Dalglish knows that he can pick up the striker for a minimal fee as he is out of contract at the end of the season and Anelka is keen to leave the club as he has slipped behind the likes of Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge.
With Romelu Lukaku also now at the club, Anelka's time at Stamford Bridge is certainly coming to an end and director of football at Liverpool, Damien Comolli, hopes to persuade Daglish to make a £4 million offer for the forward.
Liverpool have dominated a number of games this season but have often struggled to finish off sides, especially at Anfield where they have drawn with Norwich, Manchester City, Norwich and Manchester United.
After Monday's tie against Fulham, Liverpool's next four Premier League games are against QPR, Aston Villa, Wigan and Blackburn before a home tie against Newcastle to round off the year.
