Sir Alex Ferguson has chided his Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger ahead of their Premier League clash by saying that Manchester United would not have gone six years without winning a trophy.

Wenger, into a seventh season since his last success, has faced mounting criticism from pundits and disgruntled Gunners fans.

Ferguson hails Wenger’s contribution to the Arsenal cause and sprang to the defence of the beleaguered Gunners boss as few days back when they were teetering on the brink of failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Although Fergusion sympathises with Wenger’s plight, he pointedly insists United would never be subjected to such a barren spell under his stewardship, according to the ‘Daily Mirror’.

English football’s most successful manager declared: “I wouldn’t have allowed that to happen.

“We set our own standards. Arsene’s got his way and I’ve got my way and you do the best of what you believe in.”

Ferguson felt Wenger’s faith in French players has not paid dividends with Samir Nasri being the latest departure from Emirates Stadium.

“I don’t know exactly what his philosophy is, but for a long period he signed young French players. That seems to have dried up a little,” he said.
He conceded that teams could go a number of years without winning. “For years Arsenal and ourselves were competing for the title, then it was Chelsea and us. Now City are on the map and everybody’s expecting them to win the League this year,” he said.

“It happens that way. You just have to hope you’re in the cycle all the time.”

Ferguson has repeatedly maintained he has no doubts he would feel the heat of media pressure if his strike rate diminished, but fends off the threat by staying one step ahead.

“If we don’t win in any particular season I don’t look back but ahead to find ways of making sure we win the next season,” he said.

That foresight has ensured a constantly evolving team at Old Trafford and an ever-lengthening list of honours.

His latest batch of young players have left the likes of Dimitar Berbatov on the fringes, fuelling suggestions that the Bulgarian could still be sold before the transfer deadline.

But Ferguson is adamant the striker is staying at United and can still play a significant role for the club this season.

“We’re not going to sell Berbatov – no way,” Ferguson said. “He will be involved. He’s got the experience to play a big part.

“They all want to play, but the young players are picking themselves and at the moment the games are well spaced out. But Dimitar’s been first class. No problem at all.

“When the Champions League and Carling Cup come along there will be opportunities for the other players to get games.”
