Dubai has never had a single structure affected by the aftershocks from earthquakes hitting neighbouring countries, a senior Dubai Municipality official told Emirates 24|7.
“Dubai does not fall in the earthquake zone. We do feel the aftershocks, but no structure has ever been affected because of it,” said Mohammed Mashroom, Director of Survey Department, Dubai Municipality.
The latest Globe of Natural Hazards report by Munich Re, world’s largest reinsurance company, categorised the UAE as Zone 2 – MM VII.
The MM VII rating refers to “very strong” on its earthquake intensity scale.
According to Mashroom, all the buildings in Dubai have and are being built as per the code of earthquakes.
The department keeps updating the code and has recently done so.
“History does prove that we are not in an earthquake zone, all the buildings in Dubai meet the earthquake resistance code.”
Dubai Municipality had already launched a system in the UAE to monitor the movements of the earth's crust according to the latest technologies in the field of seismology, which consists of four field stations.
Each station contains a device to record the seismic activity and another device for recording acceleration of the earth as these stations are distributed in different parts of the emirate.
