Arsenal target Juan Mata has rejected a late move from Tottenham to move to the Emirates, according to the ‘Mirror’.

Spain winger Mata, who played in Valencia’s friendly with Sporting Lisbon this weekend, wants Valencia to let him go and his father and agent has asked the club president Manuel Llorente to rubber stamp the £17 million deal by Tuesday.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp had also expressed an interest in acquiring the services of the former Real Madrid youngster recently.

Mata himself has stated repeatedly that he is keen to stay at Mestalla and only signed a new contract last summer with the buy-out clause set at a massive £52.5 million.

However, recent reports have pointed towards the Gunners being poised to break their transfer record for Mata. An agreement has been reached for the player to leave for between £17.5 millio and £22 million, according to reports.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has also encouraged Mata join the ranks, insisting that the Gunners’ style of play would go well with his game.

“He is a top quality player, we’ve seen that in the Under-21’s and in the Spanish league last season. I think the way Arsenal play would suit his game,” Wilshere told Goal.com.
