Almas is just a few years old but she is not like many other children, who love sweets, nuts or chips. Almas enjoys something else—fried locusts.
A YouTube film showed the girl from a Gulf country happily crunching the fried locusts at her house while a large dish filled with the insects was placed on the table in front of her. The man who was shooting the film asked her in Arabic what she was eating and she was so frank. “Locusts,” she said, as she continued to crunch. “ When he asked her how they taste, she replied :”like chips.” He then asked her why she was eating locusts. “I like them,” she replied.
The Kuwaiti daily Alanba, which carried the film, did not specify Almas’ nationality but said more than one million people had viewed the film in just three weeks.
Locusts are a favorite dish to many people in the Arabian Peninsula, mainly Saudi Arabia, where a 10-kg bag of locusts could be sold for over $100.
