Future: Underwater towers to Mars holidays @ Earth's 'bubble cities'

Bubble cities, “earthscrapers” and 3D-printed homes are likely to become a reality in a century from now, according to a report.

The SmartThings Future Living Report, written by a group of academics and futurologists, and commissioned by Samsung, says that in the next 100 years humans will have the option to live in underwater cities – Earthscrapers - which will go down 25 storeys underground and 3D-printed homes.

It suggests "bubble cities" will be created underwater, making the depths habitable for human beings, while personal drones will become a staple mode of transport and even carry entire homes around the world for holidays.

Holograms will enable virtual meetings to take place in offices and 3D-printed food will become smarter, with the ability to download dishes from favourite chefs and print a cordon-bleu banquet at the touch of a button.

The Moon and Mars will be colonised in the next 100 years, as commercial flights into space will become a regular occurrence.

Homes will become smart with LED-screen walls which can be changed to suit the prevailing mood, thus eliminating the need to redecorate. Furniture in homes will be 3D-printed with technology allowing replicas of entire houses and structures.

“Our lives today are almost unrecognisable from those a century ago. The Internet has revolutionised the way we communicate, learn and control our lives,” said British space scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock and co-author of the report.

“Just 10 years ago, technology like SmartThings would have been inconceivable. Yet, today, developments like this let us monitor, control and secure our living spaces with the touch of a smartphone. Over the next century, we will witness further seismic shifts in the way we live and interact with our surroundings,” he added.
