'Diabetic' Emirati drowns on fishing trip

A 22-year-old Emirati student suffering from diabetes died after his boat capsized off Abu Dhabi emirate while two friends who were with him managed to swim to safety.

Abdullah Saeed Al Zaabi was fishing with his Emirati and Asian friends off Al Marfaa in the western region on Friday when their boat capsized due to bad weather conditions.

His two friends succeeded in swimming to the coast and phoned rescue authorities but Zaabi died after he failed to swim back to shore because of his illness.

His body was found nearly 24 hours later and taken to his home town of Ras Al Khaimah, where he was buried on Sunday, newspapers said.

“He was an accountancy student at Abu Dhabi Colleges of Technology. The two who were with him managed to swim back to shore but he could not exert much effort because of his illness. Fe drowned in the water, but his body was found a day later. He was buried on Sunday,” his uncle Ibrahim Al Jawi said.
