Sheikh Khalifa Bridge to be new gateway to Abu Dhabi

The newly built 10-lane Sheikh Khalifa Bridge to Saadiyat Island and a 27km expressway has been opened by General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces.

Several sheikhs and senior officials were present at the ceremony yesterday.

The 1.4km bridge was named after the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi, in recognition of his vision towards propelling Abu Dhabi to become a leading global capital in accordance with the Vision 2030 mandate for its overall development.

The expressway stretches from Port Zayed on Abu Dhabi mainland to Shahama District, passing through Saadiyat and Yas islands. The Sheikh Khalifa Bridge, which is the new gateway into Abu Dhabi, is part of major infrastructure works on Saadiyat Island, being developed by Tourism Development and Investment. Aldar Properties constructed the majority of the expressway.

Sheikh Khalifa Bridge is one of the largest infrastructure developments in Abu Dhabi. It was constructed using 15,000 tonnes of asphalt and 15,500 tonnes of reinforced steel.

More than 1,300 people and more than 7.5 million man hours were spent on the works which began in December 2006 and December 2008 respectively.
