Cyclone Bijli does little damage to Bangladeshi coast

Officials say cyclone Bijli has briefly made landfall in Bangladesh without causing any serious damage before heading toward neighbouring Myanmar.

AccuWeather.com said the storm would continue to move east-northeast this weekend across northwest Myanmar. Winds will slowly weaken during this time, but flooding from rainfall remains a considerable risk, it said.

“Bangladesh is now completely out of danger.” said Ayesha Khatun of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, adding that the storm crossed the coast of the South Asian nation at 0300 am. On Friday night, the outer edge of cyclone lashed southern Bangladesh, prompting the government to evacuate tens of thousands of residents from the country’s low-lying coast.
