Ukraine to host Euro 2012 despite organizational problems

The Union of European Football Associations’ president says Ukraine will not lose its right to host the Euro 2012 soccer championship despite organizational problems.

Ukraine has been running behind schedule due to a devastating financial crisis, one of the worst in Europe, and constant political turmoil.

But Michel Platini, who was in the capital Kiev to inspect preparation for the event, said on Wednesday that Ukraine would still play host to the prestigious tournament. He said “It is impossible that Ukraine would lose Euro 2012.”

Ukraine is co-hosting the event with neighboring Poland. Both countries face the challenge of building stadium, hotels, roads and other infrastructure. UEFA’s executive committee next month will chose from 6 to 8 host cities in the two countries.
