Government Communications Office approved by Cabinet

The Cabinet, acting under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to set up a comprehensive system for internal and external communication in the Federal Government, has given approval for establishing a Government Communications Office.

The new system will conform to the global technological achievements in this field, and enormously support the strategic plan of the Federal Government. The office will function within the General Secretariat of the Cabinet. Once commissioned, the office will substantially improve the internal and external communication channels in the Federal Government, and will ensure a high degree of transparency and accuracy of information passed among various ministries and other federal entities. The system will adopt the best global practices in the field of government communication.

Minister of Cabinet Affairs Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi said the establishment of the office comes in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to streamline communication among ministries, as it will enhance team spirit within the federal machinery. Ultimately it will contribute to the achievement of the general objectives of the federal strategy of governance.

The new system will introduce a number of initiatives, the first of which will be the appointment of official spokespersons for the Federal Government. This will ease the work of media institutions when dealing with the government, and will ensure speed and accuracy in conveying government information to the general public, Gergawi said.

The office will set up a communication network linking various federal ministries and entities. The office will have a coordinative and supervisory role and will evolve, from time to time, the communication strategy. It will also provide necessary support and consultation to the ministries and federal authorities to achieve the goal, said Gergawi.
