Just what the doc ordered
There is very little that Microsoft has done on Windows 7 that would qualify as ground-breaking innovation. Nothing that any other operating system will have to imitate or offer, not just yet.
But developers and writers at Apple and Google will do well to pay attention as Windows 7 quickly eradicates the horrific Vista and potentially the sublime Windows XP.
What it lacks in earth-shattering development, it has compensated for with user-friendly design and enhancements on a much safer platform. None of which are characteristic to Windows.
Features such as its multi-function task bar, jump lists, internet accelerators, well-customised search functions, and importantly, far better compatibility are certain to create new user habits. Habits others will be forced to study since most of these features stem from programs that Mac, for instance, has offered for years. Windows 7 has simply refined them and eased interface.
Microsoft has finally paid heed to years of demands and woes of Windows OS users who would have abandoned the multi-billion dollar empire three years ago when the disgraceful Vista was launched. Had Apple relented to offering its Mac OS for all computers, it would have been the death of Windows. For ever.
While Apple may never offer its OS to others, it is heartening to know Microsoft has upped its game.
Many have said Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. If that were the case, it is hard to imagine what shape Windows 7 would have taken today. This really is a landmark achievement for the 24-year-old OS and one that should bring back user confidence.
Windows 7 Ultimate is essentially the best of its Home Premium and Professional editions and almost identical to Windows 7 Enterprise. It packs in a multitude of features that only offices are likely to use. But there is more than enough for the home user. The new e-mail interface Windows Live, a very impressive search library and not-so-original-but-much-needed Movie Maker make life on the OS a lot easier, quicker and more fun.
The stand-out feature is the ability to customise and position anything, anywhere. Free-moving gadgets and window panes, pinned programs, single-click desktop customisations and views – there are no rules or limitations.
Business users will appreciate AppLocker that allows you to define which applications can run on a network, and BitLocker To Go, which allows encryption of all your sensitive data on portable devices. There is a truckload of other useful features that this column does not have the inches to detail. Just be assured Windows 7 is what you were waiting for.
