Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan speaks to Emirates24|7

The Score’s sixth concert honored the very best of Indian classical music with the Master of the Sarod, Amjad Ali Khan, appearing live with his sons, Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan, at Madinat Theatre on Tuesday 28th May.

In a career spanning over 50 years, Amjad Ali Khan has single-handedly elevated the Sarod to one of the most popular traditional instruments in Northern India.

Taught by his father, the legendary Haafiz Ali Khan, he is the sixth in an uninterrupted lineage of music masters known as the Senia Bangash School.

Winner of Padma Vibhushan, the Highest Indian civilian award, Amjad has begun another glorious chapter in the history of Indian classical music.

Khan first performed in the US in 1963 and has continued through the 2000s.

In 2009 Amjad Ali Khan was nominated for a Grammy award in the Best Traditional World Music Album category for the album 'Ancient Sounds'.

On the ninth anniversary of 9/11, Amjad Ali Khan gave a Peace Concert at the United Nations in New York in the presence of the UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon.

As well as being the first Indian performer at Sanctuary Hall, he has been a regular musician at the Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Kennedy Center, House of Commons, the Sydney Opera House and many other renowned concert halls across the globe.

This was a special opportunity to be inspired by the magic of Amjad Ali Khan accompanied by his sons, Amaan Ali and Ayaan Ali, in the intimate setting of the stunning Madinat Theatre and to be touched by Amjad’s passion for the traditional Sarod.
