'Independence Day's' Jeff Goldblum's resounding 'Boo' to Donald Trump

A recent celebrity poll saw Jeff Goldblum listed as one of the nicest people in Hollywood.

Meeting the actor in Dubai during the press junket for ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’, one can truly understand why.

From stories of him hanging out with fans post his weekly jazz show in Los Angeles to lending an ear to his film’s cast and crew members as they pour out their troubles, Goldblum seems to have earned his title with aplomb.

However, even his legendary patience takes a backseat when it comes to US Presidential candidate Donald Trump.

“Boo to Donald Trump,” says the 63-year-old actor. “A hundred thousand boos to him. With people like him at the helm of our great nation can only spell disaster.”

Were the filmmaker’s political affiliations perhaps visible in this new sci-fi action film that sees Sela Ward play Elizabeth Lanford, the first female President of the United States a la Democratic candidate Hilary Clinton?

Goldblum replies: “I think ‘Independence Day’ is very progressive in its setting, and by this I don’t just mean depicting a woman to play the US President. Having said that, in real-live I do believe America is ready for a woman in the Oval. Yes, we are ready.”

However, that’s not all Goldbum wants to highlight.

“Our film itself is progressive in terms of the technology we have depicted to combat the aliens, a lot of which that could not have been achieved 20 years earlier because such means simply did not exist,” he says.

The actor is reprising his role of David Levinson, the smooth-talking scientist whose job is to prepare the world for another alien invasion after the first battle 20 years earlier. Needless to say, the groundwork is all in vain.

Like a kid on Christmas morning, Goldblum’s face lights up as he talks about his latest face-off with the alien lifeforms, saying: “They are bigger than ever, they are angry and they want revenge.”

Few know that the now popular line following the scene of Burj Khalifa flying through the air in a haze of destruction in ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ was coined by Goldblum himself.

"'They like to get the landmarks'" laughs Goldblum. "I thought it was a fitting line to use and Roland decided to keep it in."

However, this time around, 26-year-old Liam Hemsworth has replaced his original partner in crime, Will Smith.

Did Goldblum miss smoking a cigar with Smith on-screen?

"That really was one of my favourite moments from the first past," reveals Goldblum. "Of course, I would have loved to have worked with Will, but he couldn’t do the movie for some reason and Liam has filled those shoes in very well."

The actor will soon start filming with Hemsworth’s older brother Chris in Marvel’s 'Thor: Ragnorak'. Ask him how the experience has been working with both of the Hollywood hunks and Goldblum replies: "Well, Liam has been great. But I have yet to start filming with Chris."

Goldblum plays The Grandmaster, one of the ageless Elders of the Universe, in the Marvel franchise.
