Afternoon accident on Sheikh Zayed Road

Reports of a major accident has brought traffic to a virtual standstill on Sheikh Zayed Road, mere hours after an another accident occurred in the same area.

The accident is reportedly near Oasis Centre, Dubai bound, causing chaos during the Thursday afternoon rush hour as people are leaving offices early to enjoy the weekend, said a witness.

While few details have emerged of the accident as yet, Dubai Police has tweeted the same, confirming the time as 12.21pm, saying: “An accident has been reported on SZR opposite Oasis Centre. Please drive carefully and safely.”

Traffic Dubai, a community Twitter handle, also stated the same, requesting drivers to “take alternative if possible.”

Meanwhile, reports of non-moving cars have come in with tailbacks extended to Dubai Media City.

Mohamed Zorob wrote: “Avoid Shiekh Zayed Road E11 heading north. Deadlock from Mall of the Emirates to first interchange. Traffic at full stop.”

An eyewitness to the accident said: “The authorities have arrived on the scene, but the cars are not moving. Whatever has happened is major.”

Earlier today, the same stretch also witnessed major tailbacks with authorities and commuters confirming a two-car accident opposite Oasis Centre, heading into Dubai.

The morning accident occurred at 8.28am near Noor Islamic Bank, heading towards Dubai, with Dubai Police saying: “An accident has been reported on Sheikh Zayed Road towards Mall of Emirates and there is traffic, be careful.”

One of the damaged cars appears to be a Toyota Yaris, which reportedly spun around on impact to face oncoming traffic on the major highway.

It is unclear which was the second car involved in the accident.
