88 killed on Dubai roads in 5 months
Dubai maintained its position as having one of the world’s worst traffic records, with nearly 1,160 accidents killing 88 people in just five months.
Police records for January-May showed the accidents also resulted in the injury of about 900 people and nearly 90 of them were seriously hurt.
The report showed 62 deaths were caused by head-on car crashes while the remaining victims died in mishaps involving run-overs and vehicle turnover.
The report showed 238 accidents, nearly a quarter of the total traffic mishaps during that period, were caused by sudden change of lane while 214 accidents were a result of failure by the drivers to leave enough space with other vehicles.
Jumping the red lights caused 44 accidents that killed four people while excess speed resulted in 26 crashes, killing six.
Those between the ages of 19 and 30 emerged as the main culprits, causing 266 accidents that killed 49 people.
It was followed by those in the age group of 31-44 that caused 177 accidents resulting in 22 deaths.
